Airo Trains Enter Final Testing on the Cascades Corridor

Amtrak's Airo trainsets are in Stage 3 testing on the Cascades corridor, with revenue service confirmed for later in 2026. Here's what riders can expect.

Somewhere on the BNSF main line between Seattle and Portland right now, a brand-new stainless-steel trainset is running a practice schedule with no paying passengers on board. Engineers are logging brake performance through the Nisqually curves. Crews are drilling on door cycles at Tukwila. And at King Street Station in Seattle, mechanics are learning the guts of a train that, in a matter of months, will replace the workhorse that has defined Amtrak Cascades for a quarter century.

The Amtrak Airo — the brand name for Siemens Mobility's Venture-class trainset in Amtrak livery — is in the final stretch of testing on the Cascades corridor. Amtrak has confirmed revenue service will begin "later this year," making 2026 the biggest year for Pacific Northwest intercity rail since the Talgos rolled in around the turn of the millennium. For a corridor stitching together Eugene, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver BC — one of the busiest state-supported routes in the country — this is not a small refresh. It's a generational fleet turnover.

Three Stages, One Very Careful Rollout

Amtrak isn't handing keys to a brand-new $10-billion-plus fleet without an unusually deliberate testing regime. A May 17, 2026 Amtrak press release laid out the three-stage protocol every Cascades Airo trainset must pass through:

  1. Stage 1 — Pueblo, Colorado. Core systems validation at the federal Transportation Technology Center (TTCI), the industry's go-to closed-loop rail testing facility.
  2. Stage 2 — Northeast Corridor. Active-track testing on Amtrak-owned NEC rails to build real-world operating confidence at speed. The Venture platform is certified for up to 125 mph.
  3. Stage 3 — Pacific Northwest. Route-specific shakedown on Cascades tracks (mostly BNSF-owned, shared with freight), plus staff training, practice runs, and final safety certification.

The milestone dates paint a clear picture of momentum. The third Cascades Airo trainset shipped from Siemens' Sacramento factory on April 21, 2026. The first trainset departed Bear, Delaware heading west on May 14, and arrived in Seattle for Stage 3 on May 17. All eight Cascades-allocated Airo sets are expected to complete manufacturing by the end of the year — part of the 83 Airo trainsets Amtrak has ordered nationwide under what its Board (July 31, 2026) called "more than $10 billion in new fleet investments." What the Airo Replaces: The Talgo Series 8

The trains coming off the roster are the Talgo Series 8 sets — Spanish-built, articulated, low-floor consists with passive-tilt technology that entered Cascades service between 1998 and 2002. They were remarkable machines in their day, and in an unusual arrangement, WSDOT owns them while Amtrak simply operates them.

But they are now roughly 25 years old, well past their intended service life. Spare parts are increasingly hard to source. The interiors read as late-1990s. Most consists lack seat-level power and reliable Wi-Fi. And critically, they have no onboard wheelchair lifts — accessible boarding depends on manual ramps and a limited number of designated spaces.

The Accessibility Upgrade Is the Headline

Amtrak's July 24, 2026 press release, Amtrak Advances Accessibility Across Its National Network, was explicit about what riders will notice first:

Later this year, Amtrak will also introduce new Airo trainsets on the Amtrak Cascades route connecting Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. These trains will feature onboard lifts, accessible restrooms, spacious entry areas and improved access to onboard amenities.

The onboard lift is the single biggest ADA leap the Cascades corridor has ever seen. It transforms wheelchair boarding from a manual, staff-intensive ramp maneuver — dependent on station configuration and available personnel — into an independent, dignified process that works the same way at every stop. King Street Station: Yard Upgrades and a North American First

New trains need new infrastructure. Amtrak's October 2024 and May 2025 announcements documented an extensive upgrade program at the King Street Station rail yard in Seattle — updated maintenance bays, new servicing equipment, and depot compatibility work — all initiated roughly two years before revenue service to avoid a scramble at launch.

King Street also picked up a genuine "first in North America" on June 10, 2026: the continent's first passenger rail preclearance facility. Riders on Seattle–Vancouver BC trips now clear Canada Border Services Agency customs inside King Street before boarding, eliminating the old customs stop at Pacific Central Station in Vancouver. That's not just a customer-experience upgrade — it meaningfully shortens the international journey and sets a precedent other cross-border corridors will study closely. It also fits the broader Seattle-region rail renaissance alongside projects like the Federal Way Link Extension.

The Borealis Effect: What a Refreshed Corridor Can Do

For a sense of what's possible when a state-supported corridor gets modern equipment and real investment, look at the Amtrak Borealis (Chicago–St. Paul). At its two-year anniversary in May 2026, the Borealis had carried over 416,000 passengers, with corridor ridership up roughly 27% over two years — a story we covered in our Borealis two-year retrospective.

Cascades has bigger bones to start with. Pre-COVID ridership sat around 850,000–900,000 passengers per year, making it one of Amtrak's top state-supported corridors. COVID knocked ridership down by more than 80%; by 2023–2024, Cascades was tracking toward ~80% of pre-pandemic levels. Modern trainsets, plus WSDOT/Oregon DOT co-funding, plus federal IIJA-funded signal and Positive Train Control upgrades on the BNSF-owned right-of-way, give the corridor a real path to not just recovery but growth. Current frequency — roughly 4–5 round trips Seattle–Portland, 1–2 Seattle–Vancouver BC, and 1 Portland–Eugene — leaves plenty of room to scale.

A Bridge to Cascadia HSR

Amtrak Airo is not the endgame for Pacific Northwest rail. It's a bridge. The long-term vision shared by Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia is Cascadia High-Speed Rail — a fully grade-separated line capable of 200+ mph between Vancouver BC, Seattle, and Portland. A 2020 WSDOT business case study projected a fully built-out Cascadia HSR could carry 4+ million passengers per year, an order of magnitude beyond today's Cascades ridership.

But HSR is a multi-decade, multi-tens-of-billions-of-dollars project — a horizon closer to what California's high-speed rail program is walking through now. The Airo gives the corridor a modern, higher-capacity, ADA-compliant train that can serve the PNW well for the next 15–20 years while HSR planning and funding mature. The Bottom Line

For riders, the Airo launch means power outlets, real Wi-Fi, dedicated bike storage, spacious vestibules, PNW-inspired café service, and — most importantly — accessible boarding that finally matches 2026 expectations. For the region, it means a corridor built for growth rather than nursing a 25-year-old fleet through its twilight. For the climate, it reinforces a mode that already emits roughly 80–90% fewer greenhouse gases per passenger-mile than solo driving, and roughly 15–20 times less CO₂ per passenger than the SEA–PDX flight when you factor in door-to-door time.

Cascadia HSR is still years — probably decades — away. But somewhere on the BNSF main line right now, the train that gets the Pacific Northwest to that future is running its final laps. Later this year, it opens its doors.
