One Agency, One Plan

TransLink is a single regional authority that operates SkyTrain, bus service, SeaBus, and the West Coast Express commuter rail across Metro Vancouver. The GO Crowdsourcing Fix

SkyTrain does not publish GTFS-RT vehicle location data. That means no third-party app can show real-time train positions from official feeds. Transit App fills the gap with GO crowdsourcing: riders' phones act as moving data points, and the AutoGO machine-learning feature automatically identifies which SkyTrain train a rider is on. The Long Game

  • Consolidated regional governance. Illinois's NITA Act shows this is politically achievable in the US when the fiscal alternative is worse.

The Boring Answer Is the Right One

Vancouver's World Cup performance is a useful benchmark precisely because it isn't glamorous. TransLink didn't deploy a novel technology or unveil a signature project. It ran a well-designed network at higher frequencies, charged its normal fare, published clear wayfinding in multiple languages, and let a partner app fill in a real-time data gap. The million-boarding Saturday looked routine because, structurally, it was.

The next few years will bring the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, more Super Bowls in venues of varying transit sophistication, and continued arguments about what the FTA, the states, and municipalities each owe when a global event lands in a metro region. The cities that copy the boring parts first — station siting, standard fares, unified governance, frequency compression — will find that when the crowds arrive, the network mostly takes care of itself. That is the whole point of a transit system, and the quietest kind of success it can deliver.
